Shanghai, also called "Hu" for short, is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River along the center of the mainland's coastline. It is connected to Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in the west and the East China Sea in the east. Shanghai has long been a major hub of communications, transportation, and international exchange. The municipality covers an area of about 2,448 square miles (6,341 square kilometers) and has a population of more than 13.5 million. Shanghai is China's largest city in population and economy.
